  • Cooking lesson with our chef at the Mary Budden cottage kitchen patio: The cooking lesson will be held at the Mary Budden cottage kitchen patio with our chefs, Ganesh and Gobind, both experts on Indian cuisine. Spend an afternoon or evening learning how to make “tandoori” chicken, the Indian version of barbequed chicken or the famous Indian “masala” tea.
  • Evening music performance by the MBE staff, around a bonfire: The staff at Mary Budden play the flute, and a make-shift drum and would love to regale guests with local Kumaoni songs and traditional dances. The hostess will be happy to translate these songs for you.
  • Morning prayers at the estate temple: Every Monday morning, prayers are held at the Shiva temple on the property, when we collect to sing hymns and do an “aarti” at the temple. Experience local culture at its best in religious devotion.
  • Local tea at Binsar temple tea-shop: Take a short 20 minute stroll from Mary Budden estate down to the local temple, for a taste of tea at a small “dhaba” or tea-shop run by a villager and his only companion there, a dog called Simba.
  • Visit to Dalar village and tea at the homestay: Walk down to Dalar village (options described in the other document) and visit the home of a villager to interact, learn their way of life and also enjoy some locally made tea.
  • Visit to the primary school at Dalar: The primary school at Dalar has less than 10 students who love to meet and chat up guests. Spend some time interacting with the kids here, before heading back to the estate.
  • Picnic lunch enroute to Dalar village homestay: On the day of your visit to Dalar village, we will organize a picnic lunch enroute, at a lovely spot in the forest, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the snow peaks.
  • Sundowner at leopard hill, Mary Budden estate: Enjoy an afternoon of indulgence at Mary Budden estate’s largest sit-out area, where we will organize a sundowner for you.

About The Lodge

Mary Buden Estate-Binsar

Mary Budden Estate is located in a cozy corner of the Kumaon, in the magnificent middle Himalayan Mountains.

Come to Mary Budden Estate to relax in a serene setting within the secluded Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, where we are proud of our environmental and cultural sustainability.

You will get to unwind and re-connect with nature at our family run luxury homestay, a fully restored heritage home dating back to the 19th century. Mary Budden Estate harvests rain water, is fully powered by solar energy and its gardens are abundant with organic produce.

The sanctuary serves as a home for leopards, ghorals, wild boar, kakars, monkeys, Indian red fox, jackals, pine martens, Himalayan black bears, and porcupines. In addition to this, it also houses more than 200 species of birds that are of both resident and migratory.

We also run a two room village homestay in Dalar village, one of five villages inside Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Typical village mud walls and the traditional craft of wall painting called aipan, grace the walls and though every point of comfort along with an ensuite bathroom is part of this home, one is transported into an authentic village experience.

A day trek into the village, meeting the other residents and getting to know their way of life is an integral part of your stay. Kumaoni village cuisine and a chance to sit around a fire in the evening to the sound of a flute or a possible music recital by some villagers are some of the highlights of the Dalar Village Homestay.
