Pench is named after the Pench River which flows to the reserve from north to south. A setting for the Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book the Pench is predominantly a dry deciduous forest with intermittent patches of grasslands and is located at the southern stretch of Satpura Landscape. The top predator is tiger with co-predator like wild dogs and leopard. The other major fauna includes spotted deer, sambar deer, blue bull, barking deer, Indian gaur, jungle cat, leopard cat, striped hyena, langur monkey etc. The bird diversity of the park is also good and almost 250 species of birds including resident and migratory are found in this park.
